How to use a URLLink.acsm file with Adobe Digital Editions
1. Introduction to URLLink.acsm files
When you purchase a copyrighted book, it is sometimes provided as a URLLink.acsm file, which allows you to download the book in PDF or EPUB format via Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). This file is a secure link that connects to Adobe’s servers to verify the access rights associated with your Adobe account, ensuring you are authorized to read or download the book.
2. Restrictions and rights management
- Each URLLink.acsm file is linked to a specific Adobe account. If you open the file with your Adobe account, it can no longer be reopened with another account.
- Transferring protected files: You cannot directly share a protected file with another person for them to open with a different account. This method protects copyright and prevents unauthorized distribution.
3. Use on multiple devices
If you want a teacher, a learning specialist, etc., to access your digital book, you can authorize their device as long as it is connected with the same Adobe ID as yours (or that of the institution). Once the device is authorized, the book will be accessible but will remain linked to your account or that of the institution. It is possible to dissociate a device from the Adobe account later.
4. Steps to open a URLLink.acsm file with Adobe Digital Editions
- Download and install Adobe Digital Editions
Visit the official Adobe site to download and install the software. - Launch Adobe Digital Editions
Open the software once the installation is complete. - Add the URLLink.acsm file to the library
- Option 1: Double-click on the file. If ADE is correctly installed, double-clicking the .acsm file will automatically open the book in Adobe Digital Editions.
- Option 2: Manually via the menu. In ADE, go to the File menu > Add to Library…, then select the URLLink.acsm file on your device.
- Authentication:
Adobe Digital Editions connects to Adobe’s server to verify that the Adobe ID account used has the required rights to access the book. If the file is protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management), you will need to authenticate with your Adobe ID to read or download the book.
5. Device compatibility
Adobe Digital Editions is compatible with the following devices:
- Windows
- macOS
- iOS (via the dedicated app)
- Android (via the dedicated app)
Please ensure you have the latest version of the software or app to ensure optimal compatibility.
6. Device disassociation
To disassociate a device from your Adobe account, follow these steps:
- Open Adobe Digital Editions.
- Access authorization settings: Go to the Help menu > Erase Authorization.
- Confirm disassociation: Follow the instructions to disassociate the device from the current Adobe account. You can then authorize another account on this device if needed.
7. Managing common errors
If you encounter issues opening a URLLink.acsm file or authentication failure, here are some solutions:
- Authentication issue: Ensure you are logged into Adobe Digital Editions with the same Adobe ID used when purchasing the file. If you forgot your ID or password, you can reset your information on the Adobe website.
- The .acsm file does not open: Check that the file was not corrupted during download. Try downloading it again from your purchase account.
- DRM error: Make sure the file is correctly associated with your Adobe account and that the device is authorized.
